Jan 21, Book rated it it was amazing Shelves: english , guide , photography. During my many years of practicing amateur photography, Adobe Lightroom is one of the most commonly used applications. Anyone who was interested in Adobe Lightroom guides for sure had heard about Scott Kelby because since the first application version his!

Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers! In this latest edition Lightroom 5 version is discussed and he made it look everything interesting again, giving all his vast knowledge about Adobe’s applic During my many years of practicing amateur photography, Adobe Lightroom is one of the most commonly used applications. In this latest edition Lightroom 5 version is discussed and he made it look everything interesting again, giving all his vast knowledge about Adobe’s application in his simple to understand style which is helping user in step-by-step learning process.

To be helpful even more, the book itself is laid out in a start-to-finish Lightroom workflow order. Beside simple explanation what can be done with each part of application author is presenting his own techniques, he speaks about his personal settings and styles that will help user in becoming proficient user. Besides writing Lightroom guides, Scott Kelby also organizes training classes and it’s obvious he understands photographs and application users, he knows what is troubling them and he helps by suggesting which techniques should be good and which ones would be better to avoid, all with explanation and examples.

The book’s extra value is part of the book discussing cohabitation of Lightroom and other famous Adobe application Photoshop, what can be done with Lightroom and for what Photoshop should be integrated into user workflow. If you are searching for Lightroom guide I could recommend this one. With lot of examples from author’s rich experience, you would not only learn using application but also be able to adopt some of author’s distinct portrait retouching techniques and special effects.

Although I been using Lightroom for some time, Kelby’s new version of guide is welcome addition to my collection of photography software. Nov 17, Claire rated it really liked it Shelves: reference-how-to. This book explains how to use Lightroom 5 in a very practical way. It’s a very good reference book.

I do wish the book were larger so that the screencaps from Lightroom could be larger. Lightroom’s dark grey background with light grey text is hard to read in print. Kelby uses red circles to highlight things in the screencaps which helps. If you already have Lightroom, you could just open it up on your computer instead of trying to read the tiny text in the book’s images. I don’t currently use Li This book explains how to use Lightroom 5 in a very practical way.

I don’t currently use Lightroom but have seen it enough to be familiar with its layout which helped. The book is broken into chapters covering the different modules.

The subsections of those are broken into numbered steps. Though the numbering is sequential, sometimes the steps aren’t. That is to say step 3 might not be what follows step 2 but rather another way to accomplish step 2. I would’ve preferred additional subsections for alternative methods, but I understand it’s a huge program and difficult to organize its explanation.

The end of each chapter save one or two has a Lightroom Killer Tips section on the topic with key tips for it. Just when I thought he’d forgotten to write how to back up any presets you’d made, I checked the index and got sent to a Killer Tips section with the answer. The book also includes a white balance card in the back and a lot of extras you can download online.

I haven’t checked out the latter yet but will once I start using Lightroom. Kelby’s book was really helpful in giving me a sense of whether I would like Lightroom or not. I think I will. He also gives lots of advice on the best ways to set things up to avoid hassles and make things easier. He also covers what to do in Lightroom and what to do in Photoshop and how to get there and back.

Aside from the small print in the screengrabs, it’s a very readable technical manual. Jul 25, Kate rated it it was amazing Shelves: photography , how-to. Having suffered through a Martin Edwards authored book on Photoshop for a college class, I was thrilled to discover the clear and concise Scott Kelby. I picked this book up after “Photoshop for Lightroom Users” because I work primarily in LIghtroom and wanted a more in-depth knowledge of the program.

Scott is great. His books are clear, well laid out, and written with an eye toward functionality. We use this information to address the inquiry and respond to the question.

This book actually is designed for professional digital photographers, however, advanced hobbyists like I can pick up a lot of useful knowledge in postprocessing faze of your digital photography art.

I liked most of the chapters and really appreciated the chapter on Slideshow. You actually can burn your Collection of photos on DVD as a slide show including background music and add any type of titles and so on or just convert to PDF format and send to your friends via email. I guess you have to get use to new environment of Lightroom software. However, I can say another thing for sure that do not forget your Adobe Photoshop CS5 or CS6 as you still need it as the ultimate finishing tool.

For example, you cannot do complex manipulation with your photo involving Layers and Masks in Lightroom 5. It means you cannot replace a background without going to Photoshop or even portrait retouching is not as powerful as in Photoshop and I rather do that in Photoshop using Layers and Masks with the Brush tools applied on a mask and controlling the opacity.

Yes you do have the Adjusting Brush tool in Lightroom, but it still cannot give you that precise control over the color shifts when you use it because there is no Blend Mode adjustments. It goes for the Tone Curve adjustment also. Otherwise as a book describing all the necessary skills you need to use Adobe Lightroom 5, it’s very good and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to get the most out of Lightroom 5.

One person found this helpful. Lightroom is a big and complicated program and learning it is a major accomplishment. Kelby’s book will give you a good assist. Kelby is one of the most popular tech writers and he explains why things work as they do, and he knows how to present the material in a friendly, comfortable way.

It is not a book, however, that you can curl up with and read like a novel. That’s no way to learn Lightroom. Instead, skim a book section to get the idea, then go back and read it carefully, memorizing the steps yes, he writes in steps , then fire up Lightroom and try the steps on copies of some of your pictures, following in the book open beside your computer. Now you need another viewpoint, so click Help in the menu bar and read an Adobe tutorial on the subject. In my experience, none of these sources is complete in itself, each adds something.

The printed book, with its index is a great and comforting way to look something up, much easier than re-viewing a video. And the book is accurate: Kelby paid an assistant to verify all the steps. The index could be better; there are no entries for “move,” “copy” or “scanner,” for example. It took me some effort to discover than Lightroom has no support for scanners, that you can move drag and drop files within Lightroom–that’s in the Chapter “Folders and Why I Don’t Mess with Them,” and you can copy both files and metadata.

After I ordered the paper book, Amazon told me I could begin reading it immediately; they sent me a Kindle edition also. I thought it might be temporary, but it is still on my Paperwhite. Lightroom panels are grey on white, so I need a magnifying glass to see the screen grabs. The paper book has large, colored, glossy pages and is easier to see than the Paperwhite, but it is too big, floppy, and complicated to curl up in bed with.

I’ve given the book five stars, though it is certainly not perfect. Between the book and Adobe Help, I’ve found all my answers. I haven’t read other Lightroom books, so I can’t compare them.

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I downloaded a copy of Lightroom 5 demo, ran it and felt it was too complicated for me to change to use it. However after watching a number of online videos from the vendors of plugins I use, they all seemed to be using Lightroom and I began to see how a little bit of effort could pay off in the long run. I checked out the books available and having read some of the authors books before I thought I would stick with what I had experience with.

I’m pleased I did as this book is logical, easy to follow, gives some great tips and most importantly, contains the type of information I find useful on a daily basis when using this software. If you have no experience with Lightroom may I suggest you read the book prior to running it as there are some great tips about setting up, importing and organizing which I wish I had been aware of when I started.

The Kindle version is as you would expect not as good on the illustrations as a hard copy but I have not really found that to be an issue as most of the relevant information can be gleaned from the text.

Quirky writing style with daft American jokes that only appeal to the USA. Content is good but long winded to get to the point. Packed with loads of information and many Light Room tips. I have other books by this author and therefore I knew what to expect.

I would prefer to have concise information laid out as advertised – ‘For Digital Photographers’ without all the stupid comments interspersed and the lengthy long winded ‘Step by Step’ approach. Some steps do not need to be included. Here is part of a typical step. This is 19 of 23 from ‘sorting your photos’ – “So here’s how it works, and this is a battle where only one photo can win; On the left is our current champion Called the Select and on the right is the contender called the Candidate.

All you have to do is look at both photos and then decide if the photo on the right is better than the photo on the left In other words does the photo on the right beat the current champ?

If it doesn’t then press the Right Arrow key on your keyboard and the next photo in your collection the new contender appears on the right to challenge the current champ on the left. Several subjects in the book are like that and detract from what is a good reference book but as I said so long winded it can be a drag to get to the actual technique or instruction you need to understand or learn.
